Valore:This is the predominantly North Riding of Yorkshire spelling of a truly ancient Anglo-Saxon baptismal name which in medieval times developed into a surname of some popularity. The name derives from the elements 'Gar' meaning spear and 'bodo' - a herald. This is a typical 'dark ages' name redolent of either war, religion, and personal bravery, or a combination of the three. As a purely baptismal name, Gerboldo of Lincoln, it is recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book, the first genuine surname recording being about one hundred years later, (see below). Although of Anglo-Saxon origins it is possible that the name was introduced by the Normans, after 1066, as for many years 'Saxons' were generally dispossessed of their lands, and therefore unrecorded. Be that as it may, an ancient Coat of Arms, that is to say, prior to the Battle of Crecy in 1346, was granted to John Garbed, Knight, being a gold dragon on a red field. The early recordings include John Garbot of York in the 1397 Friary Rolls of the City, and it was from the same source that the later spelling form of Garbutt derives. Examples of the surname development include James Garbutt of York, in the City Rolls of 1602, and Alic Garbut, christened at St Peters Church, Leeds on April 22nd 1610. Other examples include Issabell Garbutt who married Richard Gray at Holme on Spalding Moor on January 24th 1631, and Jacobus Garbutt, son of Richard Garbutt, christened at Bilsdale Midcable, Near Stokesley, on January 16th 1671, in the reign of Charles 11, the Merry Monarch. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Gerbode, which was dated 1185, in the pipe rolls of Huntingdon, during the reign of King Henry 11, known as 'The church builder,' 1154 - 1189. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to 'develop' often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
